SAHR is part of a growing community of law practitioners who have joined the global campaign to End Gender Apartheid. The term came to fore after widespread and systematic attacks directed against women by the Taliban in Afghanistan and the government in Iran, particularly during the wave of women-led protests which spilled onto the streets in 2021 and 2022.

Although there have been significant advances in women's legal rights, there are still a number of key issues that must be addressed.

SAHR submitted an Advisory Opinion to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace in Colombia (JEP) on the Macro Case 11. With this Advisory Opinion, we intend to comment from a survivor-centered, intersectional, holistic perspective, and ensure that these perspectives are considered in the development of national and international law and standards on the matter.

Shortly after in March 2020, the State of Afghanistan i.e. the Ghani administration submitted a Deferral Request, on the basis that Afghanistan was in the process of investigating and prosecuting relevant cases. However, after the Taliban took over Afghanistan, the Court became seized of the Deferral Request and the following are key points from its Decision on whether to authorise the resumption of the investigation - given the new circumstances.

Gender equality in the law is a fundamental part of achieving gender justice and social progress. There are a variety of strategies that can be used to advocate for gender equality in the law.

Women's rights are the rights and entitlements claimed by women and girls in many societies worldwide. In some countries, these rights are institutionalized or supported by law, local customs, and behavior, whereas in others, they are ignored and suppressed. They differ from broader notions of human rights through claims of an inherent historical and traditional bias against the exercise of rights by women and girls, in favor of men and boys.

Gender justice, just like racial justice, is a critical issue in today's society, with gender disparity and inequality still pervasive across the globe. It takes many forms, including social and institutional discrimination, economic disadvantage, systemic prejudice, and lack of access to education and healthcare resources.

SAHR welcomes the Decision by the International Criminal Court (Court) authorising the Prosecution to resume its investigation into Afghanistan.

The Decision was made in response to inability and unwillingness of the State of Afghanistan to pursue the Deferral Request submitted by the Ghani administration on 26 March 2020, owing in part to the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban in August 2021.
