SAHR welcomes University of Queensland Pro Bono on board!
A team of motivated students from the University of Queensland Pro Bono Centre, Camille, Claire, Rachael and Cassandra, are working together to improve access to justice for battered women in Afghanistan.
At present, women in violent relationships who kill an abusive spouse in Afghanistan are largely unable to rely on any legal justifications, excuses or mitigating factors to reduce their culpability under the law.
The team of students, supervised by Balawyn, are researching international best practice on defences to murder in order to develop arguments under the Afghan Penal Code and Sharia law to redress this situation. The team members are putting the themselves in the shoes of criminal defence lawyers to develop legally and culturally appropriate arguments to advance and protect the interests of women in Afghan law.
